North Texas -1.5 at Charlotte: small road number for a pace-control defense-first profile that travels well. In close spreads, I’ll side with the team more likely to dictate tempo and get clean late-game possessions.

This is a classic “who dictates the script” game. Charlotte wants this looser and more transition-friendly to leverage its volume scoring and huge offensive rebounding (14.7 OREB/g). North Texas is at its best when it turns the game into a half-court grind, forces late-clock shots, and makes every possession a chore. With the spread sitting inside a single possession, I’m siding with the team more likely to control tempo and get cleaner late-game looks — and that’s North Texas.

Two angles I don’t think the number fully prices in:

1) Market tells you this should be closer to a pick’em. DraftKings/FanDuel are hanging Charlotte -1.5, but multiple books are already shading toward Charlotte -1/-0.5. When you see that kind of disagreement on a short spread, it’s often the sharper side grabbing the dog +points early, and the “true” line drifting toward PK.

2) Charlotte’s profile is fragile when the game slows. They’re scoring just 68.4 PPG on 39.6% FG and only 63.4% at the line — that’s not what you want laying points in a game likely decided in the last two minutes. North Texas isn’t pretty offensively (17.4 turnovers per game is a real wart), but they’re more efficient overall (42.5% FG, 70.2% FT). In a tight road game, free throws matter.

Matchup-wise, Charlotte’s edge is on the glass, but North Texas can offset some of that by simply reducing total possessions and forcing Charlotte to execute in the half court. Charlotte’s recent form also isn’t screaming “lay points” (4 losses in last 5 before the East Carolina win), while North Texas has stacked quality efforts recently (wins over Florida Atlantic, Memphis, Temple in the last few).

Pick: North Texas +1.5 (-110). I’d play it down to +1, and I’m fine with the moneyline sprinkle as well.

Confidence: 2 units (out of 5).
