Charlotte is getting priced like a clear tier above Portland, but the reality is these teams are dead-even in the standings (29-31 each) and both come in on equal rest (2 days). The market is leaning hard into Charlotte’s recent blowout run (three straight road wins by margin), and that’s exactly where spreads get inflated — you’re paying a premium for recency and a little “public” shine. Laying 7.5–8 with a sub-.500 home team (12-16) is a tax I’m not interested in.

Two angles the number isn’t fully accounting for:

1) Home/away split + role reversal: Charlotte has been better away (17-15) than at home (12-16). Meanwhile Portland is mediocre on the road (13-16), but not “auto-fade by 8” bad. If this were truly an 8-point gap, you’d expect Charlotte to have shown more consistent home separation across the season.

2) Regression off extreme recent scores: Charlotte’s last three were 133, 131, 129 points — that’s not a stable baseline. Portland’s recent log is volatile too (including a 54-point loss), which can distort perception, but they also have shown a live defensive gear (92-77 win at Phoenix) and have already bounced back from that Denver disaster. Big spreads get dicey when the dog has shown both ceiling (road wins) and the ability to “ugly up” a game.

Matchup-wise, I’m betting on spread value and game script: Charlotte can win and still fail to separate. With the spread widely sitting 7.5 and several books shading to 8, I’d rather grab the hook before it disappears. This profiles as a 3–7 point game far more often than a double-digit Charlotte cruise.
