UMBC is rolling at home (10-2) and just throttled three straight opponents by an average of 20 points. UAlbany is a dismal 4-12 on the road and lost by 3 to these same Retrievers three weeks ago. Open-and-shut case for laying the points, right? Not so fast.
The market is overreacting to UMBC's recent run and undervaluing a critical offensive mismatch. Yes, UAlbany is terrible away from home, but they score (65.9 PPG) and shoot it well from deep (35.7% from three). More importantly, they take care of the ball — just 12.6 turnovers per game compared to UMBC's 16.2. The Retrievers are winning ugly right now, grinding teams down with defense, but they're shooting 28% from three and just 43% overall. That's not sustainable against a team that can score in bunches.
Look at the first meeting: UAlbany lost by just 3 at home despite shooting poorly. Now UMBC gets 6.5 points of cushion on their home court? That's 3-4 points too generous. The Great Danes have won three of their last four, including two road wins, and they're getting Jamar Wilson (18.8 PPG, 39.3% from three) and Amir Lindsey (17.6 PPG) clicking at the same time. UMBC's offense is one-dimensional — Darryl Proctor bullies inside, but if UAlbany can force the Retrievers to shoot from outside, they'll keep this within a possession.
The pace matters here too. UAlbany plays faster (higher PPG despite worse record) and forces UMBC into transition where their shooting woes get exposed. UMBC's 10-2 home record is impressive, but six of those wins came against sub-.500 teams. This is a live dog getting inflated points.
The Play: UAlbany +6.5 (-110) | 3 units
Secondary angle: With UMBC's offense grinding and UAlbany's ability to control tempo, I like Under 144.5 (-110) | 2 units. Both teams have gone under in 4 of their last 6, and this number is 5-6 points too high for two teams shooting this poorly from the field.
