George Mason vs St. Bonaventure: Books Missing the Freefall

George Mason is in complete shambles right now, and the market hasn't caught up. The Patriots have lost five of their last six games, including getting boat-raced by 18 at home to Dayton and losing by 19 on the road to Saint Joe's three days ago. Meanwhile, St. Bonaventure just hung 94 points on Rhode Island at home and is scoring 79.5 PPG on the season — a massive 15.4 PPG scoring advantage over George Mason's anemic 64.1 PPG offense.

Here's the angle the books are asleep on: George Mason's defensive identity has completely eroded during this skid. They've allowed 81, 82, 72, 82, and 71 in their last five games — an average of 77.6 PPG when they're normally holding teams below 65. St. Bonaventure has the horses to exploit this with Andrew Nicholson (20.8 PPG on 57% shooting), Frank Mitchell (16.2/9.9), and Marques Green orchestrating at 5.2 APG. The Bonnies shoot 37.2% from three compared to George Mason's pathetic 30.4%, and they take care of the ball better (12.4 TO vs 15.7).

George Mason's vaunted 15-2 home record was built in November and December. Since conference play heated up, they've lost three of their last four at home — including that Dayton blowout. The Patriots are also working on one less day of rest (2 days vs 3), and fatigue is showing in their shooting splits. Will Thomas and Cam Long can only carry so much when the rest of the roster is ice-cold.

The spread should be closer to St. Bonaventure -1 based on current form. Getting them at +4.5 is a gift. The Bonnies match up perfectly against this collapsing defense, and George Mason has zero momentum or shooting variance to pull an upset. This is a buy-low spot on a live dog.
