Merrimack at Niagara: Fade the Road Favorite in a Late-Season Grind

This is a classic end-of-season conference game where the market is overrating the better record and underrating home/away splits. Merrimack is 20-10 and getting 7.5-8.5 points of respect on the road, but peel back one layer and the picture changes: they're 9-9 away from home, just lost at Canisius, and now face a Niagara team that's quietly 6-6 at home and riding a win over Quinnipiac.

The key angle? Offensive firepower mismatch. Niagara has FIVE guys averaging 17+ PPG. Merrimack's defense (allowing opponents to shoot 46.3% against them based on Niagara's home efficiency) will struggle to contain Charron Fisher (27.6 PPG), Juan Mendez (23.5 PPG), and the supporting cast. Merrimack's offense is anemic on the road — they scored 62, 56, and 62 in three of their last five away contests. That's a problem when you're giving 7.5-8.5 in a game with a total sitting at 126.5.

The line disagreement across books (BetRivers at +8.5, Caesars at +8, BetMGM at +7.5) suggests sharp money has been pushing Niagara up. When books can't agree and the number is drifting toward the underdog, that's usually a tell. Merrimack is also coming off an emotional home stretch (back-to-back OT-style wins over Iona and Siena) before getting smacked at Canisius. This is a letdown/look-ahead spot against a Niagara squad that desperately needs home wins to salvage respect.

The Play: Niagara +8 (-110) — I'm taking the highest number available. Merrimack's road struggles, combined with Niagara's offensive depth and home comfort, make this a 3-possession game at worst. If Niagara keeps this within 5-6 (which their recent form suggests), we cash easily. Secondary lean: Under 126.5 (-105) — both teams play slow, grind-it-out styles, and Merrimack's road offense is a liability. I expect a 67-62 type game.

Confidence: 3 units on Niagara +8. This number shouldn't exist.
